Since Anton Mahringer's father had no understanding for his son's desire to become an artist, Anton Mahringer initially worked in the Stuttgart customs office. After a knee injury that resulted in a lifelong stiff leg, he had to change his education and began an apprenticeship at a bank. At the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts, he prepared for admission to the art academy there. From 1928 he attended the painting class taught by Anton Kolig, who was appointed from Nötsch in Carinthia. During an excursion with his teacher, he got to know the landscape of the Carinthian Gailtal for the first time, which left a lasting impression on him. He supported Kolig in the execution of the frescoes for the Klagenfurt country house and moved permanently to Nötsch in 1931. From this point on, landscape painting became the focus of his work. Together with Anton Kolig, Franz Wiegele and Sebastian Isepp, Mahringer formed the Nötsch Circle, a loose group of artists who lived and worked in Nötsch.
