From 1922 and 1924, Edgar Jené studied at the Academy in Munich and then in Paris. There he was introduced to the surrealists around André Breton. He travelled to Italy and Switzerland before he moved to Austria in 1935 as a "degenerate" artist, where he lived until 1950. Jené was founder of a surrealist movement in the post-war era in Vienna, which became the basis for the art of the "phantastic realists". In his studio they recieved authentic accounts about the paintings of the surrealists and got crucial impulses even though they took different paths later on. Jené moved back to France in 1950 where he died in 1984.
