Franz Lex studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Alois Delug. He then worked as a teacher and freelance artist. In 1937 he exhibited in the Glass Palace in Vienna's Volksgarten as a member of the artists' association “Die Brücke” led by Rudolf Buchner. A year later, Lex exhibited in the Zedlitz Hall in Vienna as a member of the „Gemeinschaft bildender Künstler“ (Community of Visual Artists), which brought together the members of the artist associations that existed before the annexation, with the exception of the Künstlerhaus and Secession. From 1938 to 1947, Lex worked as a teacher at the academic high school in Vienna, later he taught at the Goethe-Realschule in the 14th district. One of his students was Erich Sokol. After the end of the war, Lex was appointed “section leader of the painters group” of the Berufsvereinigung der bildenden Künstler Österreichs (Professional Association of Austrian Visual Artists).
