Wilhelm Kaufmann received his education at the Vienna Academy under Rudolf Bacher. In 1924 he became a member of the "Kunstgemeinschaft Wien". From 1932 to 1938 he was a member of the Hagenbund, from 1946 a member of the Vienna Secession and from 1950 a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. From 1938 to 1945 he was banned from working. In 1947 he was awarded the State Prize of Honor for Painting, and in 1952 the Prize of the City of Vienna. He was appointed professor in 1949. In the spring of 1955, the Vienna Künstlerhaus held a collective exhibition of 46 works, and in the spring of 2006, a retrospective was held at the Vienna Diocesan Museum.
